  • Selective allocations to regions with advanced climate tech policy frameworks, circular economy mandates, or distinguished longevity/senior care models (e.g., UK, Nordics, DACH region).

Jurisdictional Boundary Requirements:

  • All investments must operate within jurisdictions with robust rule of law, strict anti-corruption standards, and enforceable minority investor rights.

The following list provides a streamlined overview of the five target industries, outlining the core target markets and application areas in accordance with the Iron Horse nvestment Policy Statement (IPS).

This vertical targets commercial and industrial markets adopting high-efficiency power systems, intelligent grid management, circular waste-to-value solutions, and low-carbon manufacturing technologies. Capital is deployed into scalable products that systematically reduce kilowatt-hour consumption, abate greenhouse gas emissions, and eliminate supply chain material waste.

Target markets center on decentralized diagnostics, digital therapeutics, AI-enabled clinical workflow tools, and cost-effective medical devices designed for community and underserved health networks. The fund prioritizes ventures that compress clinical delivery overhead, expand access to care outside centralized hospitals, and measurably enhance patient diagnostic outcomes.

This vertical focuses on tech-enabled elder care coordination platforms, remote patient monitoring (RPM), cognitive health diagnostics, and assistive hardware facilitating prolonged independent living. Investments back solutions that alleviate burnout and financial strain for family and professional caregivers while materially cutting avoidable emergency hospital admissions.

Target markets include transparent micro-finance infrastructure, modern financial access tools, and skills-training platforms tailored for hourly, gig, and frontline workers. Deployment emphasizes technologies that strengthen household economic resilience, eliminate predatory financial fees, and accelerate career mobility for non-traditional demographics.

This area targets technology and service providers operating alongside conventional energy and industrial sectors to execute methane leak detection, CCUS, and closed-loop process water treatment. Capital supports pragmatic, high-impact innovations that verifiably reduce, mitigate, or offset environmental degradation across existing energy infrastructure during the broader structural transition.

Investment Philosophy: The "Dual-Track" Mandate

Every investment evaluated by the Fund must clear two rigorous, non-negotiable hurdles:

  • Financial Hurdle: Evidence of a viable, scalable business model capable of achieving top-tier market-rate venture returns (Target net IRR: 20%+).
  • Impact Hurdle: A defensible "Theory of Change" where the company's core operations, products, or services inherently generate positive social or environmental outcomes or materially mitigate existing negative externalities.

Thematic Focus Areas

Iron Horse VC concentrates capital across these five core impact verticals:

  • Requirement: Companies must demonstrate verifiable emissions reduction pathways and adherence to best-in-class environmental stewardship.

Impact Measurement & Management (IMM)

To safeguard mission integrity and prevent "impact washing," Iron Horse VC integrates end-to-end IMM into the investment lifecycle:

  • UN SDG Alignment: Portfolio assets must map directly to at least two United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (e.g., SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production).
  • Standardized Metrics (IRIS+): KPIs are benchmarked using the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) IRIS+ catalog (e.g., MWh of Energy Conserved, Metric Tons of GHG Avoided/Sequestered, Number of Elderly Individuals Maintained in Home Care).
  • Pre-Investment Due Diligence: Impact targets and baseline metrics are established and codified during the term sheet/deal structuring phase.
  • Incentive Alignment (Impact Carry): A defined portion of General Partner carried interest may be conditioned on the portfolio meeting predefined impact thresholds.

Investment Restrictions & Exclusions

Iron Horse VC maintains an exclusion policy designed to bar activities counter to social responsibility:

  • Production or trade in weapons, munitions, or tobacco products.
  • Predatory lending, exploitative labor practices, or documented human rights abuses.
  • Traditional energy or fossil fuel operations that lack a verified, technology-enabled decarbonization, efficiency, or mitigation plan.
  • Organizations with chronic, unresolved environmental violations or corporate governance failures showing no commitment to remediate.

Iron Horse Impact VC builds its portfolio so that every company advances the mandate, while the fund as a whole stays diversified across impact verticals, industry sectors, investment stages and geographies.
